Water Damage and Cupping: What Hardwood Floors Need First
What cupping can mean, what to do first, and what a photo cannot tell you.
Direct answer
Cupping means the edges of a board are higher than the middle. It often means the wood took on moisture. But a photo cannot tell us where that moisture came from or how bad it is underneath. If you have an active leak, stop it if it is safe and take photos. Then have the floor looked at in person.

A closer look at wood
Every floor has details worth seeing.
This PHR-supplied floor photo shows wood detail, not a promise about your home. Use the guide below to understand the question, then look at the actual floor before you choose a path.
Cupping shows a shape, not the cause
Raised board edges can point to moisture. They cannot tell us if the cause was a spill, leak, damp air, or something under the floor.
- Do not pick sanding from a photo alone.
- Do not assume the floor will flatten, needs replacement, or can be saved without an in-person look.
- Wood reacts to moisture. That does not tell us what happened in one room.
Stop the water and take notes
If water is still coming in, stop it if it is safe. Take photos. Write down when you first saw the change and which rooms are affected. That gives the person checking the floor a better starting point.
- Dirty water or a large water loss may need a different specialist. Ask the right pro about the next step.
- A general drying time is not a promise about hidden water, the floor below, or the repair result.
Look at the whole floor
The source of the water comes first. Then the wood floor and the floor below it need to be checked. Damage can be hidden. That is why a cosmetic fix should wait until the actual condition is known.
What this page cannot decide
This guide can help you ask better questions. It cannot choose drying gear, a finish, sanding, a repair, or a schedule. Those choices need the real floor and a written scope.
